Mitra Alice Tham’s MA, MM, PGDipRAM, B Mus.(Hons), FLCM, LLCM, LRAM, LMusA, ATCL first public performance was at the age of three and her international debut at the age of eight in Japan. Originally from Malaysia, she has won many prizes at international competitions, including the Rosario-Marciano Preis for the most eminent artist personality, the Russischer Musikpreis for the best interpretation of Russian music, the coveted title ‘The Excellent Player Award’ at the prestigious Asia Oceania Festival held in Thailand and the ‘Young Millennium Pianist’ of Singapore.
She was the recipient of scholarships from the Purcell School, Singapore Lee Foundation, Singapore National Arts Council, Shaw Foundation, Chiron Trust and received the ‘Gifted Young Musician’ Bursary. Mitra attended the Purcell School and the Royal Academy of Music, where she studied under Patsy Toh. She obtained her Master’s degree in performance at Mannes School of Music, New York where she studied with the distinguished late Cuban-American pianist Jacob Lateiner.
Mitra was awarded the Blüthner scholarship to study at the International Sommer Musikakademie in Leipzig, performing at the Göhliser Schloßer and Gewandhaus. For two consecutive years, she was awarded a scholarship by the Mozarteum Universität for their Musicakademie. She was awarded a full scholarship to attend the 33rd International Workshop of the America Institute of Music Society held at Graz, Austria.
Her performances in Asia, Europe, United States and Great Britain include solo, chamber music and concerto concerts. Her performances exhibit her special talent of composing live on stage, and she has been featured extensively on television throughout Asia. She has performed to luminary dignitaries such as the late President of Singapore in the Singapore President Charity Concert and HRH The Prince of Wales, in a performance at the Purcell School that was aired on national radio later that evening. Prince Charles in an interview described the performance as ‘brilliant and excellent’.
Mitra is a skilled composer and arranger, and commissions have included transcriptions and other famous works for piano quintet, choirs and other various ensembles. She gave the London premiere of Leroy Anderson’s Piano Concerto where The Classical Music wrote “…Tham’s flying about the piano with great bounce and gusto”. Mitra has performed the complete Prokofiev Piano Sonatas in a 3-concert series in London. She was specially invited to be a guest at a Reception “A Celebration of Young People in the Performing Arts” given by the late Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Mitra was invited to Malaysia to give a Masterclass, Interview Forum and Concert where Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, led a standing ovation. She was commissioned to compose the anthem for a Malaysia national project: Melaka Gateway. This launch was officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, with Mitra on the podium conducting. She has also performed in concerts in conjunction with the Ecuador Embassy in UK. Mitra is currently working on composing, arranging and producing the music for a new national project presided by the Sultan of Johore in Malaysia to be launched this year, 2024.
This is my composition for the National Project in Melaka in Malaysia. I was commissioned to write this piece of music for the National Project. This was recorded in Abbey Road Studio - and I was invited back to Melaka in February 2014 for the launch of the grand opening of the project presided by the Prime Minister of Malaysia whereby I was asked to conduct the Royal Malaysia Police Band performing Melaka Gateway.
We see a mass of cloud rolling towards us from the far distance … we hear the rumblings of thunder …. it seems to be getting nearer to us….what is it? …The emergence of Melaka Gateway!”
It is so exciting composing the music for Melaka Gataway and working together with such a brilliant team. Melaka, filled with so much history, intertwined with so many diverse cultures and nationalities. The anticipation of Melaka Gateway starts with the drumming from all the different cultures which makes Melaka so unique. Drum roll, Chinese Lion Dance Drumming, Congas which pays tribute to the Portuguese influence, Arabic Djembe Drums, Our local Malay Kompang Drumming - all these all roll into one big wave and we present to you Melaka Gateway! This piece of music also has a rather majestic feel to it - which represents the Grand and Majestic focus of this exciting Project. It has 2 distinct personalities, One with much pomp and circumstance, and the other side of the coin which shines and shimmers so beautifully and magically. This encompasses what Melaka Gateway stands for and we look forward to welcoming you with open arms to our exciting gateway - where the Past Presents the Future!
